Your Opinion: Hospital leaders support two high schools

Dear Editor:

As leaders for Jefferson City's hospital systems, we wholeheartedly support an additional high school. This is not a matter of whether it needs to be done, it is a matter of when. And the time is now.

The discussion about a second public high school has spanned three decades. Over that time we have seen growth in the district with the addition of two middle schools and elementary schools to accommodate the needs; however, little has been done to improve learning conditions at the high school facility. Regular investments in education are critical to the growth of our community just as it is to other core services such as law enforcement, emergency services and infrastructure.

Our hospitals are vital to the health and wellness of our community. We are constantly seeking talented health care professionals. Recruitment of nurses, physicians and other medical personnel is strengthened by a great school district. The perception of the school system can be the turning point for a potential candidate considering relocation. Advancing our educational facilities not only offers benefits in recruitment but also cultivates future generations better prepared to seek professions in health care.

When a community has a flourishing school system everyone benefits. Students are offered better learning environments, setting them up for greater success in the future. Teachers can do their jobs better in an environment conducive for learning and the community becomes more desirable for families to call home.

We owe it to future generations of our community to advance education. By voting "yes" on Proposition J and Proposition C you are voting "yes" for our students and the future of our community.
