Your Opinion: For a better future, eliminate the past?

Dear Editor:

The year is 0001! We have now eliminated all information and objects of the past, since they no longer have value. The past is history, has no value, and is just something that we can do without. Photographs, paintings, and all other references to any year earlier than Year 0001 have now been eliminated!

The self-righteous powers of today have eliminated history, as it no longer has value. It is now illegal to speak about how our country was, only how it is. By eliminating all things not relevant to today, it is thought that there will no longer be racial bias, no conflict between rich and poor, and we have no one who may have offended us. We no longer have to consider political correctness.

All old things are gone! We have eliminated all history. There no longer is anything to offend anyone. No memory of the Civil War or its monuments in our country, or any past conflict that might have hurt someone's feelings. The weight of the past is gone and we have eliminated all things with reference to it. No history books, no films, except animal films, are now allowed due to the newly enforced "no hurt" code. Hopefully no one will find fault if they own a collie, and only films about poodles are in vogue.

All street signs with names such as Roosevelt Boulevard, M.L.King, Jefferson Street, Robert E. Lee Drive, and thousands more, have been removed! We are now rid of any reflection of the past that someone may see as inappropriate.

We have a blank page to start off Year 0001. We can join the ranks of 1940s Germany, 1917 North Korea, and probably a few other countries. Isn't it wonderful? Freedom at last!

Congratulations! We have managed to eliminate all things that someone feels badly about, or could.

Don't be watchful of your neighbor, in this new blameless, thin-skinned country, he/she may not like your lawn and just eliminate it! Remember, with today's standards that are now acceptable. Remember, we must not hurt anyone else's feelings. Ours don't matter!

History is the teacher of yesterday and should be maintained, so same mistakes are not repeated today. When we eliminate history, we have nothing to base the actions of today on!
