Your Opinion: The United States of Planet Earth

Dear Editor:

I am very happy about a recent Associated Press article published by the News Tribune, "Mexico offers teaching jobs to 'dreamers' returning from US."

I am happy about the expanding use of English all across the planet. I see this as a positive influence.

A few years back, Rotary hosted guests from Korea. The business of the groups leader: running a private English-language school. Students would study all day in the public school. They would study English all evening in the private school. There are many more examples.

Interest in the English language could translate into interest in the United States. They U.S. has a Constitution which is well-respected in many places. One Rotary member from South Africa goes out of her way to praise our Constitution.

Imagine if some of the nations outside of the U.S. borders requested admission to the union. The Constitution has provisions for admitting additional states. If Mexico became a U.S. state, there would be no need to deport Mexicans. Anything is possible.

Imagine if more nations requested entry, and they were approved by the U.S. government. Eventually, this could lead to "The United States of Planet Earth."

Many people fear "globalization." What they may fear is having the U.S. "ruled" by outside forces. I submit that the U.S. Constitution is a more perfect document than the United Nations charter. This pathway might minimize such feats.

Members of political parties might fear loss of power. Many people might fear change to our current system of separate nation-states. This system seems to me to be a bit problematic. Many different languages is also problematic. The expanded study of the English language could go a long way toward addressing both of these problems.
