Your Opinion: Support cap on electric rates

Dear Editor:

As a small business owner I am somewhat skeptical of legislation regarding consumer issues. Recent bills at the Capitol proposing to cap electric rates are intriguing but there is always "devil in the details." As I researched the pending legislation I found the proposal includes $1 billion to improve the energy grid that results in a more dependable and smarter grid while improving reliability and security. It also distributes more than $55 million in tax revenue for schools, roads and bridges, as well as addressing other state needs and will provide significant energy savings for the typical residential electric consumer. This is made possible by cutting electric rates by 4-5 percent within 90 days of being signed into law, freezing rates for three years from the last rate increase, and capping future electric rate increases. I believe all Missourians, businesses and residential customers, benefit from passage of this legislation. It is time for Missouri to provide leadership with regard to utility regulation; join me in urging our lawmakers to pass this legislation.
