Your Opinion: What happened to common sense, civility?

Dear Editor:

As a product of the '50s as I watch the news I have to wonder if the whole world just hasn't gone crazy. What has happened to common sense, decorum and civility in political discord?

The backroom deals of Tip O'Neill and Reagan would be a welcome respite from the bloody Schumer-Trump Twitter Wars and the Trump resistance of the press that cause us all to gasp at how bad it's become. In all honesty would O'Neill support any of the folly of today's Democrat Party; I think not. A proud Irish-American, do you honestly think Tip would ignore tons of immigration law and urge law enforcement to catch and release, or just look the other way? Would he support abolishing ICE in the face of millions of illegals moving freely about our America. He supported labor and had the good sense to know that every illegal immigrant compromised an American worker from making a living wage and burdened a welfare system never designed to carry this heavy a load. How would he feel about Hollywood and politicians embracing socialism as a remedy to pacify millions who can't or won't achieve the American Dream of decent housing and medical care.

Is free college, free housing, free medical the only real answer? He knew someone would eventually have to pay. Can you spell Venezuela? Industry drives countries, not free stuff! O'Neill knew that American jobs are the essence of what drives us; supporting and defining us. Do you think he ever envisioned a day when his fellow liberals would embrace a gender-free society; where boys' and girls' showers are interchangeable? Maybe he would feel good about ball players taking a knee to protest how they are treated in a world where they get paid millions to play a "game" while other uniform-wearers take the risk of coming home under the very flag they protest? I doubt it. How would he feel about demonstrations by the likes of Black Lives Matter and the incredibly violent exploits of Antifa? Don't all lives matter? How is shouting someone down or bashing a head constructive debate? How about America's very own history being superficially rewritten in the public square so as not to offend anyone? I believe if Tip O'Neill were alive today he would stop this nonsense or, more likely, walk away and become a Republican. Crazy, I tell you!
