Your Opinion: Set aside childish debates, work toward uplifting others

Dear Editor:

In the Feb. 11 newspaper, in the opinion page, a gentleman wrote that he was in his 70s and did not have a good time remembering the past. For him, I have sympathy as I am a bit older and have very fond memories of my past, even though it certainly was not the greatest.

It was good when 10 cents actually purchased for you 10 cents worth of something. It was wonderful to go to church on Sunday, even though it was a bit of a walk, just to see the smiling faces, listen to the hymns being sung, and listen to a minister that didn't have a microphone, a band for back-up music, or a professional choir to make a musical point.

It was good to work for what I got and actually get what I worked for. Even after I had been married a few years I could still buy furniture for a little three-room apartment, including a refrigerator, for around $300 or so.

Sunday afternoons were spent with my mother playing the piano, my dad on the violin, and brother with his trombone I was the dummy that just sang to the best of my ability.

It is interesting that his mindset on our great country and president is not a happy one. I am pleased to see the stock market up more than down, more people working than have been for some time, and a president's solid attempt to live up to promises made during campaigning.

As I have suggested before, let's set aside childish debates, get to work on getting along with our neighbors and co-workers, and do something with our lives that is uplifting rather than down sliding. Perhaps if we would start doing that instead of running each other down, our elected officials would take pride in following our lead and do what they said while running for office instead of doing what they can get by with to further their own agenda.

As for Elon Musk, who has done well, even with two failed marriages and perhaps other things that are not written down yet, like his draft dodging, that could become something of a drama as well, but let's not go there. He has done very well and I am sure his advice to President Trump was good when he was there as an advisor. I hope his success continues.
