Your Opinion: Vote single issue: gun control

Dear Editor:

Most Americans support stronger gun laws. Most of the opposition to strengthening gun control is from Republican members of Congress. Why, if most of us want changes in the current laws do we not see any serious attempt to make those changes? How can we, "the people" get our voices heard? There is only one way, in my opinion, to compete against the big money (over $50M spent by the NRA to elect Republicans and Donald Trump in 2016 for example) and that way is to vote.

Vote single issue in 2018 and 2020 - gun control. It would only take two elections to change the course of American history on this horrific issue of guns and gun violence dominating our lives.

Even if you can't bring yourself to vote for a candidate of the other party because your party's candidate does not support strengthening gun control, then just don't vote in that particular race.

For too long we have let elected officials hide behind their prayers and words of sympathy for families of dead children. ("My thoughts are with all of the families affected by the horrific attack," tweeted Roy Blunt, recipient of millions of NRA contributions and support) We let them talk around gun control with words like "Second Amendment" right. All the time we know that this argument is simply bogus.

We have let them get by with comments like "I don't know enough yet." Well when will you know enough? What is it that you don't get? That you don't know? Perhaps worst of all we have let them run away from doing their job by making statements like "there are gun laws; they just need to be enforced." How many more dead children, innocent spectators at sporting events or the movie theater are we going to bury?

I'm fed up. Aren't you? Let's get our voices heard - elect people who will listen to us, not big money.
