Dear Editor:
"Did You Know?" entitled an article in News Tribune, June 7, page B2.
The question was: Did you know that a chaplain at Missouri State Prison directed World Heavyweight Champion, Sonny Liston, to learn boxing?
My answer is "yes."
I also know the chaplain was the Catholic chaplain, Father Alois J. Stevens.
Father, also the prison recreation director, observed Sonny's physical prowess and mentored him into learning a legal, legitimate sport recreation.
Father continued mentoring after Sonny's release. Sonny became a Golden Gloves champion and then moved to professional boxing. He lost his world heavyweight championship to Mohamed Ali.
Thank you, Father Stevens!
