Your Opinion: Reducing atmospheric carbon

Dear Editor:

Over 1,000 members of Citizens Climate Lobby convened in our national capitol in early June to meet with their respective congressmen. Thirteen Missouri members of Citizens Climate Lobby traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with Sens. Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt, and their representatives on June 12. They asked their legislators to introduce and support a revenue neutral carbon fee designed to reduce parts per million carbon in the atmosphere.

EcoWatch, May 4, 2018, reported CO2 levels reached 410 parts per million in the world's atmosphere. These CO2 levels haven't been seen on Earth in 3 million years. For 800,000 years for which we have records CO2 levels fluctuated between 170 and 280 ppm. When humans started burning fossil fuels during the industrial revolution, carbon parts per million rose rapidly. Carbon dioxide is heat trapping.

Citizens Climate Lobby exists with the sole purpose of reducing the amount of carbon in the air. Citizens' Climate Lobby proposes a fee of $15 per metric ton be placed on CO2 emissions, escalating by $10/metric ton each ear. The fee will be imposed at the mine, well, or port of entry. Net fees for carbon are held in a Carbon Fees Trust and returned directly to households as a monthly dividend to offset increased utility and transportation costs. Our senators and representatives have stated they do not hear their constituents' concerns about climate change.
