Your Opinion: Replace Fourth of July with Constitution Day

Dear Editor:

I am happy to see that the Daughters of the American Revolution have been promoting Constitution Day.

The creation of the U.S. Constitution was a great accomplishment. It was an important step toward the creation of this great nation.

I would like to suggest that we replace the Fourth of July, Independence Day, with Constitution Day as our national holiday of celebration.

The Fourth of July represents independence from Great Britain. It represents war with Great Britain. It has anti-British overtones.

We are no longer at war with Great Britain. We lo longer have a grudge against them.

The Constitution represents cooperation. It represents cooperation between the “several states” to form “a more perfect union.”

Let us have a national discussion. Let us learn to work beyond disagreement. Let us learn to work toward cooperation.

The time to begin is now. Let us make Constitution Day a bigger and better holiday than any other.
