Our Opinion: Scholarship fund a fitting honor for slain LU student

Lincoln University’s plan to create a scholarship fund in honor of D’Angelo Bratton-Bland is a fitting tribute.

It’s not only a good way to remember the late LU student, but it also will help people to pursue a college education who otherwise might not be able to afford it.

On Dec. 11, Bratton-Bland, 23, was shot in the 200 block of Dawson Street as he walked past a home where drug activity was occurring. Police said he was a victim who, essentially, was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Bratton-Bland was a decorated honors student from the Perspectives Math & Science Academy in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood.

In addition to being LU’s SGA president, Bratton-Bland was a resident adviser and a member of the Lincoln University Ambassador team.

Bratton-Bland’s friends and family described him as someone who loved LU, was committed to making a better life for himself, and wanted to give back to youth with backgrounds similar to his.

Michael Bouchee, 19, and DeAngelo Frazier Jr., 29 have been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Bratton-Bland’s death.

Bratton-Bland would have earned a degree in elementary education with an emphasis in special education this spring. The university will recognize him during commencement, awarding him a posthumous degree.

LU hopes to raise $10,000 to kick off the scholarship fund by May 1.

If you have the ability to donate toward the scholarship, consider doing so. Bratton-Bland wanted to better the lives of other people, and this will be an ideal way to do that.

Contributions can be sent to: Lincoln University Office of Institutional Advancement, 820 Chestnut Street, Room 301 Young Hall, Jefferson City, Missouri, 65101.
