Our Opinion: Perseverance and tenacity

In the wake of the May 22 EF-3 tornado that swept through Jefferson City, we said in this space that we would rebuild stronger than ever.

Many others in our community said the same thing. But, without action, those are just words.

We're pleased to report these words have been followed by action.

If you take a walk along Capital Avenue, High or McCarty streets, you'll hear the sounds of hammering and power drills. You'll see people shoveling piles of bricks onto flatbed trailers. Roofers are tearing off damaged shingles and replacing them on historic homes.

The Break Time convenience store on Ellis Boulevard opened quickly after the tornado, with a hand-made sign letting customers know it was open, despite its damaged appearance and automatic sliding doors that initially didn't work and had to be pulled open.

Next door, Sonic Drive-In has been making repairs and hopes to open July 1. Missouri Furniture has a similar time goal for opening as it restores its showroom, its roof and some HVAC equipment.

Burger King also is undergoing repairs and hopes to reopen in late July. Nearby Best Western hotel is already back in business and still working to become fully operational.

There are many other instances of businesses, homes, churches and other entities that are spending the time and money it takes to get back on their feet.

We have a long way to go, but our community has shown it is in this for the long haul. We're proud to see the perseverance and tenacity that we see all around us each day.

Some businesses like Riley Chevrolet have an even longer ways to go. The business lost close to 1,000 vehicles, in addition to extensive damage to its buildings, but it is making constant progress toward restoration.

We commend our city residents for being resilient, and we continue our past plea: Consider helping, even if you helped with the initial cleanup. There are and will continue to be more ways each of us can help our community get back on its feet with donations of time and money.
