Your Opinion: Protecting our children’s future

Dear Editor:

Last Saturday in St. Louis I watched my youngest grandchild graduate from Metro High School. With supportive parents and doting grandparents on both sides, opportunities await this young man. His schools have taught him to be aware of the world around him, and just like Bailey Higgins, president of JCHS Green Team, he has very real concerns about the world, climate change, species extinction, the melting of polar ice caps which allows more heat to be absorbed rather than reflected by ice.

As soon as he was 18 he registered to vote as I’m sure Bailey will also do, but they are each just a single voter. Are those of us who are parents and grandparents of these very young concerned citizens going to leave climate change up to these young people? Bailey explained the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act in her recent letter to the editor. In a situation as big as global warming, only governmental action will provide the real solution. We adults are the voters our congressmen will respond to so we must contact them asking them to support H.R. 763. Missouri congressmen have stated they are not hearing from Missourians concerned about climate change, so we need to let them know we do care and want them to support the Bipartisan Climate Solution: Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Money from the pricing of carbon will be returned to households to help offset increases in cost of energy as we more toward renewable energy.

I promise to contact my congressmen once a month to remind them to support H.R. 763, The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Go to citizensclimatelobby.org/write-your-representative. The site will even give you a script as to what to say to your congressman. The congressmen would like to have your email address but you don’t have to give it. They do have to know your Zip Code to know you vote in their district. It’s such a simple thing to do, but together we will make the difference for the future. There’s so much we want to do for your children and grandchildren. This is critically important for them. Hawley 202-224-6254; Blunt 202-224-5721; Luetkemeyer 202-225-2956.
