Nick Gaines ties Helias' victories record in wrestling

ELDON - Nick Gaines tied the Helias career wrestling record for victories Thursday night.

Gaines went 3-0 in a quad against Marshall, Versailles and Eldon to pick up career win No. 110. That ties the record of his father and current Helias head coach Bryant Gaines.

"I'm really happy for Nick," Bryant Gaines said. "That was one of his big goals for the season, to get to the record."

Gaines won two of his matches by fall, the other by a 17-6 major decision.

The Crusaders went 2-1 in the duals.

Helias opened with a 47-12 victory against Marshall, then fell 42-38 to Versailles. Helias rallied to defeat Eldon 45-36, winning the final three matches of the dual by fall.

Nick Gaines was one of seven Crusaders finished 3-0 in the quad. Aleksey Salaz at 106 pounds, Evan Winder at 113, Zack Carr at 126, Jackson Careaga at 132, Dustin Luebbert at 138 and Cole Czarnecki at 285. Also were undefeated

Careaga won all three of his matches by fall. Winder won twice by fall and once by technical fall. Carr and Czarnecki also had two wins by fall for the Crusaders.

Helias is back in action today and Saturday at the Platte County Tournament.

Versailles went 3-0 on Thursday, also picking up wins against Eldon (51-27) and Marshall (51-24). Eldon was 1-2 after defeating Marshall 39-37. Marshall went 0-3.
