SEDALIA - The Helias Crusaders boasted the top two doubles teams Friday to help take home the team championship at the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Invitational.
Helias finished first out of eight teams, posting 24.5 points. Lee's Summit North was second with 19.5 points. It's the second tournament title this week for the Crusaders, who won the Helias Invitational on Tuesday.
Dalton Buschjost and Tristan Grawe were the top doubles team in the 16-team, double-elimination bracket, finishing with a 4-0 record. Jacob Cowley and Jacob Schepers took second place in the doubles tournament with a 3-1 mark.
Buschjost and Grawe won 8-0 against both Smith-Cotton's and Duchesne's No. 2 doubles teams, then defeated Lee's Summit North's No. 1 pairing 6-4, 6-2 to reach the championship match.
On the other end of the bracket, Cowley and Schepers opened with a 9-7 win against Lee's Summit West's No. 1 doubles team. They then beat Smith-Cotton No. 1 pairing 8-1 before topping Lee's Summit North's No. 2 doubles team 6-4, 6-3 to make the title match.
In an all-Helias final, Buschjost and Grawe won 6-2, 6-3 against Cowley and Schepers to take the title.
In singles play, Cory Strope took fourth place in the 16-person bracket, while Seth Pezley came in sixth place.
Strope defeated Marshall's No. 1 singles player 8-3 and Smith-Cotton's No. 2 players 8-1 to reach the semifinals. He then dropped his next two matches, 2-6, 1-6 against Lee's Summit North's No. 1 player and 1-6, 1-6 against Smith-Cotton's No. 1 player, to finish with a 2-2 record.
Pezley posted a 3-2 record, opening with an 8-0 win against Knob Noster's No. 2 player before falling 0-8 to Lee's Summit West's No. 1 player, who would go on to win the singles title.
In the loser's bracket, Pezley won 6-0 against Duchesne's No. 1 player and 6-0 against Marshall's No. 1 player to reach the fifth-place match. He ended the day with a 1-6 loss to Lee's Summit North's No. 2 singles player.
Helias (6-0) plays today at the Hannibal Tournament.
