Lamar tops Versailles in district title game

LAMAR - The Versailles Tigers gave the Lamar Tigers all they could handle for about a quarter and a half Friday night, but seven-time defending state champion Lamar pulled away by halftime and won 51-28 in the Class 2 District 4 championship game.

Lamar got on the board first as it recovered a high and long opening kickoff and went 19 yards in three plays for a 7-0 lead.

Versailles quarterback Coby Williams answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Espinosa to tie it at 7 with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

Lamar led 14-7 after the first quarter thanks to a touchdown drive following a fumble recovery.

Versailles tied it at 14 with 8:39 left in the first half on Williams' 2-yard touchdown run.

But an 81-yard kickoff return, a 24-yard touchdown run and a 64-yard drive by Lamar made it 35-14 at halftime. The lead was 42-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Versailles added a pair of fourth-quarter scores on a 15-yard pass from Williams to Espinosa and a 30-yard pass to Dallas Waller.

Versailles ends its season at 7-5.

Lamar (11-1) will take on Ava (11-1) next Saturday in the quarterfinals.
