Post 5 Seniors start state tournament with a win

SEDALIA - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors made their presence felt early at the state tournament.

Post 5 scored in each of the first five innings Thursday on their way to an 8-5 win against Blue Springs.

Blue Springs scored twice in the top of the first before Post 5 came back to tie it in its half of the inning.

Post 5 then took the lead for good with a run in the second, then added two runs in both the third and fourth innings before tallying its final run in the fifth.

Blue Springs scored its other three runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Parker Schniders had three hits to pace a 10-hit Post 5 attack. One of his hits was a double. Ryan Paschal added two hits.

Schnieders, Johnathon Backes and Thomas Verslues all drove in two runs each. Brendon Williams and Hayden Hirschvogel each added an RBI.

Jason Rackers pitched the first five innings to get the win for Post 5. Rackers allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Skyler Dickneite pitched 22/3 innings of relief, allowing a run on three hits and a walk while recording one strikeout. Logan Bexten did not get an out in relief in in the top of the eighth before Drew Boessen worked the final 11/3 innings to get the save. Boessen struck out one.

Post 5 is back in action today at 1 p.m.
